Reese Cooper is only 21 years old and has built an eponymous brand that’s currently stocked at top retailers including Selfridges, RSVP Gallery, and SSENSE. This month, REESE COOPER continues to add to his impressive list of global retailer partners with the debut of his exclusive pre-Fall collection for Barneys New York titled “Against the Wind”.
What makes him special are two things – his storytelling abilities and his focus and unique take on product development, which goes head to head with some of the most prolific designers we’ve ever had the good luck to work with. His Pre-Fall collection titled “Against the Wind” was created exclusively for Barney’s XO Collections and is Cooper’s personal metaphor for fighting for his young brand to continue to grow – both in the sense of backend business and in the more intangible sense of growing respect of the industry as a valid and competitive designer. It’s also a continued narrative on his exploration of California’s remote, dusty towns. To quote Reese: “All my collections are essentially just metaphorical ways to track what’s happening in real time for me. It’s all current themes. ‘Lone Pine’ was me starting off. ‘Fever Dream’ I was depressed about a girl. ‘Hitchhiking’ I’m moving on. ‘Against The Wind’ I was trying to figure out how to continue the company…so obviously there’s the literal references, but the narratives are doubled between part of themetaphorical story telling I do and real life what’s going on.”
“Against the Wind” features new iterations of the brand’s most popular silhouettes like a classic varsity jacket, straight leg twill trousers, cotton twill work jackets featuring the brand’s signature metal hook detailing, and heavy-weight hoodies and t-shirts that feature artwork inspired by the designer’s travels through the Californian landscape, which serve to tie together his experiences, fantasies, and metaphors for his work and life.
